THE AVANT-GARDE OF THE 20TH CENTURY

and the new creator of ceramic sculpture

The European avant-garde movement of the 20th century brought along a new wave in art or perhaps one should say a “tsunami”. When a group of artists, willing to break all the rules about what artistic creation should be, broke into the traditional art world. This avant-garde movement had a profound influence on all artistic disciplines; however, it is less known that ceramic sculpture was no exception to this influence..

Traditional ceramic art attracted the attention of those avant-garde artists who found it a powerful medium to convey their transgressive ideas. A group of ceramic creators worked in collaboration with those avant-garde artists, such as the internationally famous Spanish artist Pablo Ruiz Picasso, who created his iconic ceramic sculptures together with the French ceramic creators Suzanne and Georges Ramié..

This new way of understanding each ceramic piece amazined a new generation of ceramic creators and their craftwork was transformed forever. After this beginning, more and more creators began to work on new and transgressive works far from traditional ceramics. This was the beginning of avant-garde ceramic sculpture..
